About Incontinence & the itouch Sure

Introduction

The birth of a child can affect and weaken a mother's pelvic floor and often leads on to a level of incontinence.

Various techniques can help regain control through simple exercise of the pelvic floor muscles. Frequently, such exercises will prove successful, but if incontinence problems persist twelve weeks after having had a baby, then a little extra assistance may be required.

What is incontinence?

Urinary Incontinence (UI) is the involuntary leakage of urine.

Urinary Incontinence is much more common than most people realise, often being suffered in silence and having a profound impact on quality of life. Research estimates that more than 40% of women will suffer incontinence during adult life. One survey found that over 25% had suffered at least one episode of urinary incontinence in the last year.

There are three main forms of incontinence: Stress, Urge, & Mixed.

Stress Incontinence

Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI), or sometimes known as Effort Incontinence, describes the leakage of urine during coughs, sneezes, strains or other sudden movements that exert pressure on the bladder. This the most common form of incontinence, for both men and women, and can usually be associated with insufficient pelvic floor muscle strength.

Urge Incontinence

Urge Incontinence, sometimes called Detrusor Instability, describes an overactive bladder. Strong and sudden urges to go to the toilet are experienced for no apparent reason, but is not always possible to hold on.

Mixed Incontinence

Mixed Incontinence describes the condition of suffering from both Stress and Urge Incontinence.
